Tampering with the rack shelf

Dave slowly pushed the door open. It was completely dark in the room, but he had taken a torch with him. Switching the lamps on might draw somebody"s attention, and he didn"t want that. He wanted to do everything not to get caught. His father had forbade him to enter the room, probably for fear that Dave would try to tamper with the equipment. Well, he was right, his son was one of those children who could not stand sitting still. Whenever he saw something interesting, which was usually a kind of machinery or computer equipment, he had to check how it worked. Dave reached the huge rack shelf and turned on his little torch, careful not to aim at the window. His father might enter the garden from the living room, and then he would see the light. But there was no time to think about such things. There was so much interesting stuff to look at. The computers were working quietly, however, a delicate murmur was audible. Dave touched some of the cables and tried to figure out which one led where. He pulled one of them a bit too much accidentally and then...everything went quiet. The rack shelf was still standing there, there had been no accident, nothing seemed to be out of order. It had just stopped working. Dave left the room quickly, went to his own bedroom and started thinking of some ways to explain the situation to his father.
